Shartak Map Overlay

Download: version 0.3 [please note: you must have GreaseMonkey installed first!]

The Shartak Map Overlay is a GreaseMonkey script which will overlay your in-game map with a community-created map. A Shartak player created a tool where other players can upload their "remembered" maps (using the Exploration skill) and have them stitched together into a comprehensive map of the entire game. This userscript lets you view that map right in the game, assuming you already have the Exploration skill.

If you use SharMap, would you mind sending me an email to let me know what you think of it? Good, bad, or indifferent... but do try to be civil =) My address is matt at mattandchristy dot net (apologies for the obfuscation and additional hassle). You might also email me when my list of reviv-points gets out of date, whether you want to nominate one for addition or deletion.

Future directions:

It might be nice to have SharMap cache the transparent map, much like UDRR does, but I'm not sure that I can write binary data with GM_setValue(). An even cooler feature would be a button that submits your map to BlackAnt's mapping tool (the thing that generates this overlay) to improve his work.

Troubleshooting:

If a button marked "Turn overlay on" or "Turn overlay off" isn't showing up underneath the map when you're viewing your in-game map (you must have the Exploration skill), open the JavaScript Console and see if it printed any messages. Email me at matt at mattandchristy dot net and I'll do my best to help you. Pleae include your Firefox version number (I use 3.0.1), OS platform and version (I use OS X 10.5.4), and GreaseMonkey version (I use 0.8.20080609.0). It's possible that the overlay image couldn't be downloaded; that's out of my control. Also: if you installed GreaseMonkey just to install SharMap—did you remember to restart Firefox before installing SharMap?

Release notes:

Shartak Map Overlay was created by Matt Cooper. Feel free to use the code for any non-malicious purpose, and it would be great if you would contribute your work at least to me if not to the community at large. The overlay image itself was compiled by BlackAnt but probably remains the property of individual submitters, or something.
